I’m pleased to be reaching out to you as Dean of the Graduate Division. I’ve been a faculty member in Materials Science and Engineering since 1983, but my almost two years leading our graduate programs have given me fresh perspectives on the breadth and depth of UC Berkeley.

This newsletter illustrates how our alumni, current students, and professors impact national public policy, spark regional collaborations, influence local communities, and prepare future leaders. The stories presented here give insight into the impact of graduate education at Berkeley, transforming lives and building relationships that extend over lifetimes.

You can read more about Berkeley’s fascinating discoveries and inspiring achievements every day on our campus home page.

You will notice that next month we’ll celebrate Berkeley’s third annual “Big Give”: an online social media blitz to raise awareness of and funds for students, faculty, and research. On November 17, I hope that you will join me and thousands of alumni and friends in showing your passion for Berkeley by giving back to the university that gives so much to the world.

With warm regards,
